10 Reasons Why Prayers Are Not Answered
Compiled by Moses C. Onwubiko
1) Lack of studying God’s Word, The Bible
He who turns away his ear from listening to the law [the Word of God], Even his prayer is an abomination. (Proverbs 28:9)
2. Lack of obedience to God’s Word (one thing to study – another to obey)
Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; and whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight. (1 John 3:21-22) By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. The one who says, “I have come to know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him: the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked. (1 John 2:3-6) If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. (John 15:7)
3. Lack of domestic tranquility (no peace in the home)
In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, as they observe your chaste and respectful behavior. Your adornment must not be merely external—braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. For in this way in former times the holy women also, who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, being submissive to their own husbands; just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, and you have become her children if you do what is right without being frightened by any fear. You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace so that your prayers will not be hindered.
(1 Peter 3:1-7).
4) Lack of forgiveness
For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions. (Matt 6:14-15).
5) Lack of mercy
For judgment will be merciless to one who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment. (James 2:13).
6) Lack of faith
But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord. (James 1:6-7)
7) Unresolved personal conflict (if you have a problem with a friend or spouse that is unresolved – be reconciled before you pray or worship).
Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering (Matthew 5:23 – 24)
8) A closed mind to the needs of other people.
He who shuts his ear to the cry of the poor will also cry himself and not be answered. (Proverbs 21:13)
9) Perpetual carnality (They have not built the bridge of fellowship)
Behold, the LORD’S hand is not so short that it cannot save; Nor is His ear so dull that it cannot hear. But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, And your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear. (Isaiah 59:1-2) Then they will cry out to the LORD, But He will not answer them. Instead, He will hide His face from them at that time Because they have practiced evil deeds. (Michah 3:4) If I regard wickedness in my heart, The Lord will not hear (Psalm 66:18)
Alas, sinful nation, People weighed down with iniquity, Offspring of evildoers, Sons who act corruptly! They have abandoned the LORD, They have despised the Holy One of Israel, They have turned away from Him. “So when you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide My eyes from you; Yes, even though you multiply prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are covered with blood. (Isaiah 1:4,15)
10) Selfishness (Asking only for me, me, me!)
You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures. (James 4:3)
